A documentary film about Chagas, a disease that affects nearly 20 million people worldwide, kills nearly 50,000 per year, but is practically unknown to the general public. Chagas has few external symptoms; it slowly destroys the internal organs of patients, and may not kill them for 10 to 20 years. Sometimes called the "AIDS of the poor", since its discovery in 1909 Chagas has been predicted to go away as living conditions for the poor improve in Latin America.
However, this disease continues to spread worldwide, and is aided by public ignorance and government indifference.
Latino immigrants in the US and Europe bring Chagas with them as they seek a better life. The disease is ignored or misunderstood by the medical community.
Este documental explora el mal de Chagas, una enfermedad que afecta a casi veinte millones de personas en el mundo, costando la vida a cincuenta mil víctimas por año. El mal de Chagas ofrece pocos síntomas externos, destruye lentamente los órganos internos de los pacientes y tarda entre diez y veinte años en matarlos. A veces se le llama "el Sida de los pobres", y desde su descubrimiento en 1909 se ha pronosticado su desaparición a medida que las condiciones de vida de los pobres mejoren en América Latina.
Sin embargo, la enfermedad continúa expandiéndose mundialmente, amparada por la ignorancia pública y la indiferencia gubernamental.
